Fairy Tern: The Snow-White Spectacle of the Tropics
The Fairy Tern (Gygis alba rothchildi) is a magical sight. This snow-white bird with its large, black-rimmed eyes spends almost its entire life over the open sea, covering impressive flight distances. Its main food is fish, which it hunts in low flight over the waves. In the evening, it returns with up to six small fish in its beak to its young on the Midway Islands, where about 7500 Fairy Tern pairs breed. Unfortunately, huge worldwide fishing fleets with their destructive methods threaten the biological diversity of the oceans and thus also the Fairy Tern.
