Discover the fascinating Great Frigatebird on Eastern Island (00005352)
Description: The Great Frigatebird, also known as Fregata minor palmerstoni, is a fascinating bird that lived on Eastern Island in 2001 with only 95 breeding pairs. These elegant birds are true masters of flight, with a wingspan of up to two meters and a deeply forked tail. Weighing less than two kilograms, they possess extraordinary flying abilities. The favorites of frigatebirds are flying fish, but they also hunt squids and other fish species at the water's surface. Hatchling turtles and seabird chicks are particularly vulnerable. Frigatebirds are also known as air pirates who harass other birds to obtain their prey. They are true masters of aerial robbery and often snatch their prey in a nosedive before it reaches the water's surface.
