Description: The Southern Right Whale, also known as Eubalaena australis, is a captivating marine creature seen here at the water surface in Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa. With a length of up to 18 meters and a striking appearance, this whale species belongs to the Balaenidae family. Southern Right Whales primarily feed on krill and other small crustaceans and can be found in the waters around the South Pole as well as in South Africa, South America, and New Zealand. Despite their impressive size, these gentle giants were nearly wiped out due to intense hunting. Today, only a few individuals of this unique whale species remain.
