A storm in southern Africa rummages up the sea. The white is produced by blowing on the surface and drops that reflect the sunlight. (00011350)

Stormy Sea at the Southern Tip of Africa

Description: The southern tip of Africa is known for sudden storms in hurricane force with high waves. During my many stays here, I have encountered storms with wave heights of up to eight meters. Sometimes I had to wait 10 days until the storm subsided and a trip was possible. The waters around Cape Agulhas are rich in fish. Because of the inhospitable coastline with many reefs, they are considered dangerous for shipping. Since the middle of the 17th century - in the 'Graveyard of Ships' - 140 sunken ships are said to have been moored here alone.
