Description: The White tern, scientifically known as Gygis alba rothschildi, is a graceful seabird distinguished by its delicate snow-white plumage and large black-rimmed eyes. These birds appear particularly ghostly and surreal beautiful when flying majestically against the deep blue sky. Their fragile appearance makes them seem as if they came straight out of a fairy tale. In flight, they hunt for fish over the waves and skillfully dive for prey. During the day, they feed their young and return in the evening with up to six small fish in their bill. Thousands of White Fairy Tern pairs breed on the Midway Islands, shaping the landscape of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
