Fascinating White Tern near East Island in the Hawaiian Islands (00005986)
Description: The White Tern, also known as White tern or Gygis alba rothchildi, is a graceful, delicate and snow-white bird with large, black-rimmed eyes. Near East Island in the Hawaiian Islands, these birds fly ghostly against the deep blue sky and appear surreal beautiful and fragile, as if they came straight out of a fairy tale. They hunt fish in flight by diving onto the water surface without landing. During the day, they devour their prey and in the evening, they return to the island with up to six small fish to feed their young. Approximately 7,500 pairs of White Terns breed on the Midway Islands.
