Adorable White Tern Chick in its natural habitat (00006024)
Description: The White Tern, scientifically known as Gygis alba rothchildi, is a graceful and delicate bird with snow-white plumage and large, black-rimmed eyes. Particularly striking is their appearance in flight against the deep blue tropical sky. White Terns look ghostly beautiful and fragile, almost like characters from a fairy tale. They hunt fish by flying low over the waves and diving into the water without landing to catch their prey. During the day, they swallow the caught fish and fly back to the island in the evening to feed their young. Thousands of White Tern pairs breed on the Midway Islands, contributing to the biodiversity.
