Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) takes off from Midway Atoll for a flight over the ocean (00006566)
Description: The Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) takes off from Midway Atoll for a flight over the ocean, from which it will return only several years later for breeding. Albatrosses are true flying artists and storm is their element. They feel extremely well with gales and towering waves. With their long, narrow wings, they glide for hours over the ocean without flapping their wings. There are a total of 14 albatross species worldwide, but only three of them are found on Midway Atoll. The largest breeding colony of the Laysan Albatrosses and the second largest of the Black-footed Albatrosses is located here.
Location: Hawaiian Islands, Midway, USA
