Graceful Sooty Tern flying over a lagoon in Midway Island

Description: The Sooty Tern, also known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a fascinating bird species that breeds on the Eastern and Spit Islands of the Midway Atoll. With a colony of approximately 50,000 pairs, they create a striking image. The female lays its single egg either in the sand or on the hard runway leftover from World War II on Eastern Island. After the young birds fledge, they spend up to three years continuously at sea, with driftwood or sleeping sea turtles serving as resting spots. These skilled hunters are a captivating sight in nature.
