Fascinating Sooty Tern on Eastern Island

Description: The Sooty Tern, scientifically known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a fascinating seabird. Approximately 50,000 pairs of these elegant birds nest on Eastern and Spit Island. The female lays a single egg in the sand or on the hard surface of the runway - a remnant from World War II - on Eastern Island. They breed in a large colony and stay on the open sea for up to three years continuously. The only way for them to rest is on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles on the ocean surface. Sooty Terns are excellent hunters and captivate with their adaptability and elegance.

Location: Hawaiian Islands, Midway, USA
