Discover Enchanting Sooty Tern on Eastern Island (00004844)
Description: The Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata oahuensis) is a fascinating seabird with approximately 50,000 pairs residing on Eastern Island. The female lays its egg either in the sand or on the hard runway surface, a relic from past wars. Breeding in large colonies, the birds stay at sea for up to three years after fledging. Their only respite is resting on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles. Sooty Terns are excellent hunters and captivating creatures of the oceans.
