Description: The Sooty Tern, scientific name Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a fascinating bird species native to Eastern and Spit Island. This chick is part of a colony of approximately 50,000 pairs that nest on the islands. The females lay a single egg in the sand or on the hard surface of the runway on Eastern Island. These birds stay continuously at sea for up to three years, interrupted only by brief rests on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles. Sooty Terns are skilled hunters and captivating creatures of the oceans.
