Description: The Hawaiian Monk Seal, also known as the Monachus schauinslandi, is a fascinating creature considered a living fossil. Approximately 60 of these rare seals inhabit the remote Midway Atoll. Reaching lengths of up to two meters and weighing between 200-300 kilograms, they feed on a variety of marine life. The Hawaiian Monk Seals are highly sensitive to human impacts and are on the brink of extinction.
