Fascinating South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00000498)
Description: The South African fur seal, also known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabits Geyser Rock. Located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa, Geyser Rock is home to an impressive colony of around 36,000 fur seals. While the seals are relatively safe when staying close to the island, they face a danger zone during their fishing trips into the open sea, where White Sharks lurk. White Sharks have a special preference for seals, leading to a high concentration of predators in the area. The danger dissipates only once the seals make it safely back to land.
