Discover the fascinating South African fur seal on Geyser Rock (00003681)
Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabits Geyser Rock. This small rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa. With a large colony of around 36,000 seals, the island is a crucial habitat for these impressive animals. The seals are safe as long as they stay close to the island. However, when they venture out to sea for fishing, they must cross a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These predators have a special affinity for seals and pose a threat until the seals safely return to land. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the large seal colony.
