Discover the Enchanting South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock (00003669)
Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, is a fascinating marine mammal that inhabits Geyser Rock. Located just six miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, Geyser Rock is home to a large seal colony of approximately 36,000 individuals. While these seals are safe on land and in the shallow waters near the island, venturing out into the open sea for feeding exposes them to the danger of Great White Sharks, which prey on the seals. This dynamic interaction between fur seals and sharks makes Geyser Rock both a captivating and perilous environment.
