Captivating shot of a South African fur seal on Geyser Rock (00003670)

South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, can be found on Geyser Rock. Geyser Rock is a small rocky island located approximately six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai. It is home to an impressive seal colony of around 36,000 individuals. While the seals are relatively safe when they stay close to the island, venturing into the open sea for hunting exposes them to the danger zone of the Great White Sharks. These apex predators have a particular preference for seals and patiently wait for their opportunity to strike. The significant presence of Great White Sharks in this area is directly linked to the large seal colony.
