South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, can be found on Geyser Rock. Located about six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai are the islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Geyser Rock is home to an impressive colony of approximately 36,000 fur seals. These majestic animals live in harmony as long as they stay close to the island. However, there is a constant danger when they venture out into the open sea for their fishing expeditions, as White Sharks lurk in search of prey. The presence of the seal colony attracts the sharks, who wait for the seals to return to feed on them. Once the seals safely make it back to land, the danger is averted.
