Discover the fascinating South African fur seals on Geyser Rock (00003694)
Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabit Geyser Rock. Located about six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai are the islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Geyser Rock is home to an impressive seal colony of approximately 36,000 animals. The seals are safe as long as they stay on land or in the shallow waters near the island. However, when they venture out into the open sea for their fishing trips, they must pass through a danger zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These sharks have a special affinity for seals, and the high concentration is attributed to the seal colony.
