South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock (00003701)

South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seal, also known as Arctocephalus pusillus, can be found on Geyser Rock. This small rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa. Geyser Rock is home to a large seal colony of approximately 36,000 animals. The seals are relatively safe as long as they stay close to the island. However, when they venture out into the open sea for fishing, they must navigate a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These sharks see the seals as a valuable food source, creating a tense situation until the seals safely return to land. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the large seal colony.
