Discover the Fascinating South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock (00003704)
Description: The South African fur seal, also known as Arctocephalus pusillus, can be found on Geyser Rock. This rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, in the Western Cape, South Africa. The seal colony on Geyser Rock consists of approximately 36,000 animals. The seals are safe as long as they stay near the island. However, when they venture out into the open sea for fishing, they must navigate a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These predators have a particular interest in seals. The danger is only over once the seals have returned safely to land. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is due to the seal colony.
