Portrait of a Young Cheetah in Captivity

Description: The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a majestic big cat that is nearly extinct in Asia and highly endangered in Africa. With its long legs, the cheetah is the fastest land animal. Cheetahs from different regions have genetic differences. The only remaining population of Asian cheetahs resides in Iran and is critically endangered. At the Hoedspruit Research & Breeding Centre in Kapama Private Game Reserve, both bred and rescued cheetahs are cared for and eventually released back into the wild.
