Majestic African Elephant at the Waterhole

Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal on Earth, consisting of two subspecies, the African savanna elephant Loxodonta africana africana and the African forest elephant Loxodonta africana cyclotis. These majestic creatures can reach a shoulder height of nearly three meters and weigh up to 7.5 tons. Illegal ivory trade has greatly reduced elephant populations, but the trade has been internationally banned since 1989. Today, the primary threat to African Elephants is habitat loss due to expanding agricultural areas.
