Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land mammal on Earth, consisting of two subspecies, the African Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The Savannah Elephant inhabits dry forests and savannas in Africa, reaching a shoulder height of nearly three meters and a weight of up to 7.5 tons. The elephant population is threatened by the ivory trade and habitat loss. Since the international ban on ivory trade in 1989, habitat loss due to the expansion of agricultural areas has become a major threat to African Elephants.
