Description: African Elephant/African Elephants/Loxodonta africana africana The majestic African Elephants are slowly making their way to the watering hole. These fascinating animals are the largest terrestrial beings on our planet. There are two subspecies of the African Elephant, the Savanna Elephant Loxodonta africana africana and the Forest Elephant Loxodonta africana cyclotis. The Savanna Elephant inhabits the dry forests and savannas of Africa. With a shoulder height of almost three meters and a weight of up to 7.5 tons, they are truly impressive creatures. Despite the international ban on ivory trade in 1989, African Elephants are still threatened by habitat loss, mainly caused by the expansion of agricultural areas.
