A fascinating Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) among colorful rocks in the Gansbaai Mountains (00017064)
Description: The Cape Cobra (Naja nivea) is an incredibly beautiful and intriguing venomous snake that we encountered on a remote mountainside. The sun illuminated a vibrant rock formation, resembling an island in the vast Overberg Fynbos area. The crevices of the rocks hid both the Yellow and Speckled varieties of Naja nivea. However, only the golden Cape Cobra, also known as the Yellow variety, emerged from its hiding spot. With a head seamlessly blending into its body, the Cape Cobra can grow up to 1.60 meters long. Sporting large eyes with round pupils and 19-21 rows of smooth scales along its body, this snake is a captivating sight. The color of the Cape Cobra ranges from Yellow to Reddish, Brown, Black, and occasionally speckled. This snake inhabits dry, rocky areas and displays an impressive threat display when provoked. Its venom, one of the most potent among all snakes, is neurotoxic and can lead to death within minutes.
