Discover the wonder of red mangroves in the Qara-ni-Qio River (00017888)
Description: The red mangroves, scientifically known as Rhizophora mangle L., dominate the greenish waters of the Qara-ni-Qio River in a striking manner. These trees and shrubs, reaching up to 30 meters in height, have adapted perfectly to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. Serving as a crucial link between land and sea, they act as a nursery for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in their murky waters. Many marine fish species grow up in mangrove forests, highlighting their importance to the ecosystem. These fascinating ecosystems only exist between the 30th parallel north and south and require a minimum water temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. Their extensive prop roots slow down tidal currents, promote the deposition of mud and silt, and store essential nutrients that they release to both the land and the sea. Despite their significance, mangroves are globally at great risk, with estimates suggesting that half of the world's mangrove forests have already been destroyed.
