Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) on the Banks of the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji (00017894)
Description: The red mangroves, also known as Rhizophora mangle, line the banks of the Qara-ni-Qio River on the fascinating island of Viti Levu in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, are perfectly adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as a protective and food source for a variety of marine life. Mangroves are crucial to the ecosystem, slowing tidal currents, storing nutrients, and providing a nursery for many marine creatures. Unfortunately, these unique ecosystems are highly endangered, with estimates suggesting that half of the world's mangrove forests have been destroyed.
