Red Mangrove in the Qara-ni-Qio River (Rhizophora mangle L.) support themselves with their stilt roots in deeper water (00017899)
Description: The red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is a fascinating tree species located in the mangrove forest on the side arm of the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji. Growing up to 30 meters tall, mangroves have unique adaptations to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as important nurseries for many marine species, providing ideal hiding spots. Mangroves play a crucial role in storing and releasing nutrients, supporting the ecosystem. Unfortunately, they are highly endangered, with an estimated 50 percent of the world's mangrove forests already destroyed.
