Fascinating Red Mangroves on the Qara-ni-Qio River in Viti Levu, Fiji (00017900)
Description: The Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is a captivating tree species found along the Qara-ni-Qio River on Viti Levu, Fiji, presenting itself in impenetrable forests. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, are perfectly adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. Mangroves serve as vital nurseries for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in their murky waters. Uniquely positioned between land and sea, their extensive stilt roots slow down tidal currents and promote the deposition of mud and silt. Mangroves store and produce essential nutrients, which they also release into the ocean. Despite their crucial role, mangroves are globally at high risk, with an estimated 50 percent of forests already destroyed.
