Red Mangroves at the Qara-ni-Qio Riverbank in Fiji

Description: The red mangroves, also known as Rhizophora mangle, dominate the banks of the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, form a fascinating ecosystem perfectly adapted to the conditions of salty coastlines and brackish river mouths. They serve as vital nurseries for numerous marine creatures, providing ideal hiding spots in their murky waters. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in marine life, as many fish species grow up here. Sadly, mangroves are highly endangered, with estimates suggesting that half of the global mangrove forests have been destroyed.
