Description: The red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) at the Qara-ni-Qio riverbank in Fiji are a fascinating natural wonder. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, have adapted perfectly to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as crucial nurseries for various reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in the murky waters. Mangroves play a vital role in ecosystems by storing and releasing nutrients to the sea. Unfortunately, they are severely endangered, with estimates suggesting that 50% of the world's mangrove forests have been destroyed.
