Fascinating red mangroves at Qara-ni-Qio River after a heavy rainfall (00017944)
Description: The red mangroves, scientifically known as Rhizophora mangle L., are fascinating trees and shrubs that have adapted perfectly to the extreme conditions of salty coasts and brackish river mouths. These plants are essential as nursery grounds for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in their turbid waters. Mangrove forests serve as vital ecosystems that bridge the gap between land and sea, storing and releasing a variety of nutrients. Unfortunately, mangroves are highly endangered, with estimates suggesting that 50 percent of the world's mangrove forests have already been destroyed.
