Graceful white tern on a tree on Midway Island

Description: The White Tern, also known as Fairy Tern or Gygis alba rothchildi, is a delicate, snow-white seabird with large, black-rimmed eyes. Its graceful flight against the deep blue sky and fragile appearance give it a fairy-tale charm. These birds fly low over the sea to hunt for fish. Without landing, they plunge into the water to catch their prey. During the day, they feed their young with up to six fish in their bills. Approximately 7500 White Tern pairs breed on the Midway Islands, adding a graceful beauty to the landscape.
