White chinned Petrel in front of Dyer Island in South Africa (00004492)
Description: The White chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) is a fascinating seabird that can be admired off the coast of South Africa, specifically in front of Dyer Island. With a wingspan of 1.3 to 1.4 meters and a weight of up to 1.4 kilograms, it is one of the smaller albatross species. These birds can be found year-round in the Cape region and have a special affinity for fishing vessels. Unfortunately, they are seriously threatened by longlines used in the region. These fishing gears can have devastating effects on the populations as the birds can become entangled and drown. It is a sad sight to see these majestic birds endangered by human activities and in urgent need of protection.
