Fascinating White Chinned Petrel spotted near Dyer Island (00004495)

Fascinating White Chinned Petrel flying over Dyer Island

Description: The White Chinned Petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) is a fascinating seabird native to the Cape region of South Africa. With a wingspan of 1.3 to 1.4 meters and weighing up to 1.4 kilograms, they are smaller compared to albatrosses. These birds can be found in the area all year round and often follow ships, especially fishing vessels. Unfortunately, due to their curiosity for fish waste and the danger of getting caught in the baits of longline fishing trawlers, they are particularly vulnerable. These fascinating birds are good divers, but longlines pose a serious threat. This fishing method has devastating effects on the marine environment and the seabirds that get entangled in it. A sad fate that many White Chinned Petrels fall victim to.
