Fascinating Sooty Tern - majestic over the Pacific (00004807)
Description: The Sooty Tern, scientifically known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a fascinating resident of Eastern and Spit Island in the Pacific. Approximately 50,000 pairs of these graceful birds nest on the islands. The female lays its single egg on the sandy beaches or the remnants of a World War II-era runway on Eastern Island. These birds breed in large colonies and stay continuously on the open sea for up to three years after fledging. Their only resting spots are driftwood or sleeping sea turtles on the ocean surface. Sooty Terns are skilled hunters and a captivating subject for nature photographers.
