Description: The Sooty Tern, also known as Rußseeschwalbe, is a species that nests on Eastern and Spit Islands in Midway. They form large colonies and the females lay a single egg on the sandy or hard surfaces of these islands. After fledging, the young birds spend up to three years continuously at sea, only resting briefly on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles. These graceful birds are excellent hunters and captivating inhabitants of the oceans.
