Graceful Sooty Tern gliding over the Pacific

Description: The Sooty Tern, also known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a captivating seabird that calls the vast blue of the Pacific its home. With approximately 50,000 breeding pairs on Eastern and Spit Island, they form an impressive colony. The female lays a single egg on the sand or the hard surface of the runway on Eastern Island. These birds stay at sea for up to three years after fledging, with driftwood or sleeping sea turtles as their only resting spots. Their hunting skills are remarkable as they glide majestically over the ocean.
