Fascinating Sooty Tern on the Journey to Eastern Island

Description: The Sooty Tern, also known as Sterna fuscata or Sooty Tern, is a fascinating seabird on its way to Eastern Island. With approximately 50,000 pairs nesting on Eastern and Spit Islands, their presence is truly awe-inspiring. These birds lay their eggs in the sand or on hard surfaces like runways from World War II. Breeding in large colonies, they stay continuously at sea for up to three years after fledging. Sooty Terns are skilled hunters, preying on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles at the ocean surface.
