Fascinating Sooty Tern on Eastern Island

Description: The Sooty Tern, scientifically known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, is a majestic resident of Eastern Island. Approximately 50,000 pairs of these elegant birds nest on the islands of Eastern and Spit. The female lays a single egg either in the sand or on the hard surface of the runway, a remnant of past wars. These birds form large colonies and stay continuously at sea for up to three years. Their only opportunity to rest is on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles on the ocean surface. Sooty Terns are impressive hunters and fascinating creatures of the seas.
