Discover the Grace and Beauty of Sooty Terns with Chicks in Hawaii (00004858)
Description: The Sooty Terns, scientifically known as Sterna fuscata oahuensis, are fascinating seabirds that inhabit Eastern Island, a part of the Midway Atoll in Hawaii. Approximately 50,000 pairs of these birds nest on the islands. The female lays a single egg on the sand or the hard runway surface, a remnant from World War II. These birds nest in large colonies and stay continuously on the sea for up to three years after fledging. Their only resting opportunities are on driftwood or sleeping sea turtles on the ocean surface. Sooty Terns are impressive hunters and symbolize the beauty of the North Pacific Oceans.
