Description: The African Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) is a rare endemic bird species native to South Africa. These birds breed between March and September and are critically endangered. Although 75 percent of the world population of the African Black Oystercatcher resides in South Africa and along the coast of Namibia, less than 500 breeding pairs were counted in 2001. These fascinating birds are listed on the red list and require immediate protective measures to ensure their survival.
