Description: The African Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) is a rare bird species that only breeds in Africa. With an impressive black plumage and a bright orange bill, it is a fascinating subject for nature photographers. This endemic coastal bird species in South Africa is critically endangered. Despite 75 percent of the world population of the African Black Oystercatcher living in South Africa and along the coast of Namibia, less than 500 breeding pairs were counted in 2001. Due to these alarming numbers, the species is listed on the red list, calling for urgent protective measures.
