This fascinating bird species is sighted between March and September along the coasts of South Africa. The rare and endemic coastal bird in South Africa is acutely threatened by extinction. Despite the majority of the world population of the African Black Oystercatcher residing in South Africa and along the coast of Namibia, less than 500 breeding pairs were counted in 2001. The species is on the red list, calling for immediate protective measures.
