Fascinating African Black Oystercatcher on the Coast of South Africa (00003883)
Description: The African Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) is the only species of its genus that breeds in Africa. This rare and endemic coastal bird species in South Africa is critically endangered. Despite 75 percent of the world population of the African Black Oystercatcher living in South Africa and along the coast of Namibia, less than 500 breeding pairs were counted in 2001. The species is on the Red List, and immediate protective measures are urgently needed.
