Encounter with the South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock (00003687)

South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African Fur Seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, resides on the Geyser Rock. Located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, this small island is home to a colony of approximately 36,000 seals. While the seals are relatively safe on land and in the shallow waters near the island, venturing out into the open sea for fishing poses risks as they must navigate a danger zone where White Sharks lurk. These predators hold a special interest in the seals, and the high concentration of White Sharks around the island is attributed to the large seal colony.
