Rare king cheetah resting in Kapama Private Game Reserve (00012584)
Description: The king cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) is seen here relaxing in captivity. This rare subspecies of cheetah is nearly extinct in Asia and highly endangered in Africa. Known for its long legs, the cheetah is the fastest land mammal. The king cheetah features a unique fur pattern with larger black spots that sometimes form stripes. At the Hoedspruit Research & Breeding Centre in the Kapama Private Game Reserve, both bred and rescued cheetahs are cared for before being reintroduced into the wild.
