Mother and Baby Elephant on the hunt for food in the African bush (00013337)

African Elephant and Baby searching for food in the bush

Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land mammal on Earth. Here, a mother and her baby are searching for food in the African bush. The two subspecies, the Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis), are endangered. Despite the international ban on ivory trade since 1989, their population has been greatly reduced. Habitat loss due to the expansion of agricultural areas continues to threaten their existence.
