The Threat to the African Elephant from Habitat Loss (00016102)
Description: The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land mammal on Earth. This majestic animal is divided into two subspecies: the African Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The Savannah Elephant inhabits dry forests and savannas in Africa, reaching a shoulder height of nearly three meters and a weight of up to 7.5 tons. Illegal ivory trade has severely depleted the elephant population. Since the international ivory trade ban of 1989, habitat loss due to the expansion of agricultural areas has become a major threat to the African Elephants' survival.
